In most cases, orthodontic treatment involves the attachment of some kind of orthodontic braces to the upper or lower (or both) tooth arches.

Orthodontics is no longer just for teenagers, with treatment commonly starting as soon as (or sometimes shortly before) the last baby tooth has been shed – usually around ages of 10 to 12. The Australian Society of Orthodontics recommends a first examination at around the age of seven, so that any problems can be detected and evaluated early. Orthodontists can set out an appropriate treatment plan that may make braces unnecessary or relatively short-term treatment. Most orthodontics achieve good results in adults as well.

Space maintainers
